7 Tips for Easing New Aligner Discomfort

Starting your journey with clear aligners like Invisalign is exciting. You’re on your way to a straighter, more confident smile. But let’s be honest: the first few days with a new set of aligners can come with some discomfort. While this is completely normal and usually short-lived, it can be frustrating. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to ease the discomfort and help you adjust more quickly. Here are 7 practical tips to reduce soreness and stay on track with your treatment.

1. Use Your Aligners Consistently

It may sound counterintuitive, but wearing your aligners as much as possible – ideally 22 hours a day – is one of the best ways to reduce discomfort. The more consistently you wear them, the faster your mouth will adapt and the sooner the soreness will fade. Removing them too often can prolong the adjustment period and lead to increased tenderness when you put them back in.

2. Switch Aligners Before Bed

When it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners, consider doing it right before bedtime. This allows you to sleep through the first several hours of tightness or pressure. By morning, your mouth may have adjusted slightly, making the rest of the day more comfortable.

3. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

If the discomfort is more intense than you expected, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help ease inflammation and soreness. These are safe to use for short-term relief; just be sure to follow the dosage instructions and consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

4. Use Cold Compresses

A cold compress applied to the outside of your mouth can numb the area and reduce inflammation. Hold it gently to your jaw for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, especially during the first day or two of a new aligner set.

5. Stick to Soft Foods

The pressure from new aligners can make chewing uncomfortable. For the first couple of days, try eating soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, and pasta. Avoid anything too crunchy or chewy, which could aggravate the soreness.

6. Rinse With Warm Saltwater

If your aligners are causing irritation to your gums or the inside of your cheeks, a warm saltwater rinse can help soothe the tissue. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and rinse gently for 30 seconds.

7. Keep Aligners Clean and Smooth

Check your aligners for any rough edges or sharp spots that could cause irritation. If needed, use a nail file or emery board to gently smooth them, or ask your orthodontist for help. Clean aligners also feel better and are less likely to irritate your mouth.

Mild discomfort when starting new aligners is completely normal – it’s  a sign that they’re working! The good news is that the soreness usually fades within a few days. By following these simple tips and staying consistent with your wear schedule, you’ll adjust more easily and stay on track toward your beautiful new smile.
