Does it Hurt to Get Dental Implants?

February 14, 2023

Patient undergoing dental implant treatment

Missing teeth can leave you feeling insecure about your beam. They can also lead to oral health issues, such as shifting teeth and jawbone deterioration. That’s where dental implants come in. These titanium screws are the only option that replaces both the roots and crown of the teeth. Since they are surgically inserted into the jawbone, you may be wondering if the procedure hurts. Continue reading to learn what getting implants feels like.

Will the Dental Implant Surgery Hurt?

Though dental implants are inserted through the gums and into the jawbone, the procedure is virtually painless. This is because your dentist will administer a local anesthetic before proceeding. This will numb the area, therefore preventing you from feeling any pain or discomfort.

Additionally, patients who are particularly fearful of dental treatments or who have trouble reclining in the dental chair for a long period can ask their dentist about sedation. This can help keep patients calm and comfortable throughout treatment. With that being said, you can expect to experience some pressure during treatment. Even so, it won’t be painful.

What About the Recovery Period?

You may experience some discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. However, most people say that the recovery period after having a dental implant placed is less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction. You are also unlikely to experience significant pain following the procedure.

Additionally, you will likely be well enough to return to work or your other responsibilities the day after your implant procedure. Even so, some patients need more time to relax and recover. It will take the implant four to six months to fully heal. Once that happens, you’ll have your dental crown placed, which will make it look just like a natural tooth.

To manage lingering soreness, your dentist may recommend taking over-the-counter pain relievers. Additionally, avoid eating hard foods while you’re healing from treatment since this can cause pain or discomfort. Within two weeks or so, the pain will pass. If it persists beyond that point, visit your dentist. This will allow them to determine if there’s an infection or some other issue that needs to be addressed.
